Meet the Crew

  • Jonathan Campo

FOUNDER | MANAGING PARTNER | ECD

Born and raised in New Orleans the son of a Cuban refugee, Campo spent most of his formative years drawing, noodling on cheap guitars, and (regrettably) not wrestling gators. He made his way up the Mississippi and studied art and design at Wash U in St. Louis. Campo met Henry at FCB New York in 2007, a heady year that’s notable because of the irresponsible amount of oysters the duo consumed at the now defunct Tracks Bar in the belly of Penn Station. For longer than he’d like to admit, Campo’s been hustling up and down Madison Ave., working as a mercenary freelance art director, designer, illustrator, and creative director, accruing war stories and industry awards. In 2012, Campo and Henry co-founded Gravy Boat Regatta, and ran it out of an industrial loft in Park Slope.

  • Henry Mathieu

FOUNDER | MANAGING PARTNER | ECD

Henry is 45 but he reads at a 47 year old level. He spent his childhood skiing and fly fishing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. When he was 15, he and his family moved to Paris, where he did his best to speak French to French women in smoky cafes. Henry graduated from Williams College in 2002 and he’s been writing ads ever since. He’s worked as copywriter and creative director for big agencies on big brands, and for small agencies on small brands all over the country, including: San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Charleston, and New York City. In 2012, Henry and his main man Campo co-founded Gravy Boat Regatta, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. Henry currently bounces between the Tetons, the Lowcountry, and the 5 Boroughs. He makes quiche Lorraine, and writes charming thank you notes.

  • Missy Bruno

    CREATIVE DIRECTOR | STUDIO DIRECTOR

Missy grew up on an island in the serene waters of the Niagara River, four nautical miles south of the magnificent Niagara Falls. She fell in love with art at a young age whilst sitting for a portrait. Missy’s long had ambition to become a portrait painter herself, a dream recently dashed by the ubiquitous selfie function on iPhone cameras. Missy translated her love of art into a love/hate of design at Binghamton University. And she’s been plying her trade as a graphic designer and art director at a very high level for the last 15 years. Just ask the painting elephant who appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman (she designed that elephant's painter’s smock). Missy enjoys comedy, and long walks on the beach with comedians. Missy makes delicious eggplant parmesan.

  • Lee Elliott

    DIRECTOR OF MEDIA + ANALYTICS

Lee was born in the landlocked city of Atlanta. As a younger man, his poor sense of direction steered him to Lynchburg College for four years of dubious Appalachian book learnin’. In dicier times, Lee made runs at being a PR flak, a political consultant, a copywriter, a night manager of a coffee shop, and a professional dog sitter. How does a man perform such backflips and land on his feet as a numbers guy overseeing the digital media operations of some of the world’s biggest brands? By losing bets and winning friends. Multiple archivists are currently aggregating Lee’s notorious ‘Leemails’ into a volume that will be posthumously released as, ‘Travesty Memoranda.’

  • Ruth Reyer

    DIRECTOR OF UX/UI

Ruth is a homegrown Appalachian lady, born into a blue collar family whose livelihood came straight out of the ground (not oil, but soil). A landscaper's daughter, she didn't fall far from the tree. When she's not slinging pixels she's homesteading - doing all the stereotypical things like raising fruits and vegetables and making jams, but just like her great great grandparents she also raises honeybees and small livestock. She put herself through community college working as a veterinary technician, earning a degree in visual design. Since then she's worked for various ad agencies, startups, small businesses, and publishing firms as a graphic designer, art director, marketing manager, UX/UI designer, and front-end developer. In 2017 she and her husband founded Sensor Station, a design and development studio.

  • Marcie Strang

DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE | PROJECT MANAGER

Legend has it that Marcie was born on a steamboat in the Mississippi River. Historians all agree she grew up in the iconic port city of New Orleans. Marcie spent the first act of her life devoted to ballet. She attended all manner of highbrow dance academies, including: the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center, the North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Rock School in Pennsylvania. Eventually she pirouetted her way to Indiana University, and afterward grand jetéd into a professional dance career at the Charleston Ballet Theater. In her second act, Marcie focused her uncanny eye for detail on an entirely different field: engineering. Marcie organized incredibly complicated projects for some of the planet's largest structural and mechanical engineering firms. Which brings us to her third act: Marcie the wife, mother, and Office Director Extraordinaire. She spends her downtime teaching her beautiful daughter Penelope new songs, playing hide-and-seek with her handsome son Sully, adopting lost puppies, and feasting upon her husband’s gourmet culinary creations.

  • Charlie Jackman

    SENIOR DESIGNER

Charlie spent his childhood between Querétaro, Mexico and London, England. He started playing piano at age 5, painting at age of 10, and dabbling in graphic design at age of 15. He's been working away at all three ever since. Music critics agree he peaked as a pianist during puberty, after a run of shows during his studies at a catholic conservatory of music. Art critics agree he peaked as a painter in his early 20’s during his mannerist phase. Design critics agree his best years have yet to come. Charlie currently lives in Miami, and knows more about hole-in-the-wall ramen spots than anybody in South Florida. Dogs vs. Cats? Charlie chooses cats of all shapes and sizes, especially his tuxedo cat named Oreo.

  • Willie Chiu

    DIRECTOR OF WEB DEV

It's Willie. Not William. Or Willis. Or Wilfred. Look at his birth certificate if you don't believe us. Willie grew up on the mean (and delicious) streets of Chinatown in New York City. He went to Brooklyn Tech to study Aeronautics, and then to NYU Stern to study IS and Finance. He worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and Accenture for about a decade apiece before starting his own web dev shop, Thorium Digital. Over the years, Willie has added value to all kinds of clients, including Park Place Entertainment, Payless Shoes, SC Johnson, Diageo, Popeyes, and Galaxy Fund Management. Willie loves technology, especially the web. Willie loves '80s and '90s cartoons, especially GI Joe, Transformer, Voltron, and X-Men (obviously). Willie loves listening to a variety of music genres, especially Cantopop, alternative, and pop. And also Eminem. So it's fair to say Willie is a lover, not a fighter. Interesting fact about this gentle soul: he leaves his Christmas tree up all year long, because it's pretty.

  • Nicholas Suttle

    DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY + VIDEOGRAPHY

Nick claims he was born on a pirate ship. We know for sure he grew up in the West Village in the Westbeth Community for the Arts. He successfully attended Williams College, and also graduated. Now he's a fancy fashion photographer, videographer, and jack of all (photographic) trades: beauty and fashion stills, Photoshop retouching, video editing, ripping selfies, etc. Nick has the best Instagram filters. Hands down.

  • Joshua Frankel

    ANIMATION DIRECTOR

Josh grew up in Hell's Kitchen, in a building filled with musicians, actors, and dancers. He spent most of his youth listening to hip-hop and dodging anybody who wanted to steal his lunch money. He met Henry Mathieu at Williams College, and they both studied abroad at the Glasgow School of Art. Josh has worked as an award winning film maker, animator, and visual artist. He directed, 'A Marvelous Order,' an opera about Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs, and he curates video art for the Wassaic Project. Josh is a terrific husband and proud father of two. Josh is known for his savory smoked meats and thought provoking arguments on Whysaurus.com.

  • Jessie Bower

DIRECTOR OF ECRM | SENIOR COPYWRITER

Jessie grew up in Florence Alabama, which is also where Helen Keller grew up (but they didn't know each other). At the ripe age of 14, she played Carnegie Hall. Shortly thereafter, she retired from her bright but brief career as first chair euphonium player. Jessie graduated from high school in 3 years, and then graduated from the College of Charleston in 4 years with a focus on arts management and printmaking. After that, she went to pastry school in the South of France, where she discovered her intolerance to gluten. So she cruised over to Italy and studied International Arts and Cultural Heritage Management and Cultural Economics at the University of Bologna. But even then, she wasn't done studying! She also has an MA in Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon, and certifications in Digital Marketing and Global Marketing Management from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and Boston University. Jessie worked in various arts nonprofits and as a professor of arts management over the years. She's also owned and run a liquor store (the only one that opened on Sundays for 40 miles in every direction), a concept boutique, and a restaurant. After all that music and study and pastry and travel, Jessie found a passion for email marketing and automations. She said it appeals to her big robotic heart and her love of system dynamics.

  • Morgan Gruer

    ART DIRECTOR | VIDEOGRAPHER

As a multidisciplinary designer, illustrator, art director, animator, filmmaker, and painter, Morgan is a singular talent. She’s also a triplet! Born in New Jersey, she spent her childhood trying to prove her individuality. Morgan started college at Skidmore where she double-majored in painting and Italian. But upstate New York’s winters proved too harsh. So, she transferred to warmer climes and finished her degree downstate at Pratt. Morgan has painted her way across the globe, participating in artist residencies in Chicago, Venice, and the island of Skópelos in Greece. She’s lived and worked in Los Angeles and San Francisco. But New York City, with its wonderful weather, keeps enticing her back. Morgan currently lives in Brooklyn. She can usually be found petting other people’s dogs, perfecting her cacio e pepe, or tinkering with a screenplay.

Why are we called
Gravy Boat Regatta?

We get this one a lot. It's a high/low play. If you combine two highbrow things - a pewter gravy boat and a sailing regatta - they both fall right back down to Earth. The name is a non sequitur, which we think is kinda funny. When Henry and Campo started the agency in 2012, the domain name GravyBoatRegatta.com was was still available (and would probably still be today). We've been creating ephemera for the ages ever since.

Let’s Talk

If you need some brand work and/or a new website, Gravy Boat Regatta bills on a project basis. If you need ongoing creative services, we can set up a retainer. We often function as the external marketing department for companies that have ongoing advertising and design needs, but don’t want to recruit and staff an internal marketing department.
